After what has felt like 103 days of January, we’re finally in February – hooray! But are you one of the millions who were full of good intentions on 1st January only to have given up on any New Year resolutions by the end of the month? According to a YouGov survey, less than half of UK adults kept at least one of their New Year resolutions in 2020, with a quarter of adults giving up on all of them.

So how can you keep the fresh enthusiasm of New Year’s Day going throughout the whole of 2022?

Abandon the idea of ‘Near Year = new you’

Often we choose the wrong kind of resolution – one that’s a huge, transformative journey with a ‘brand new you’ at the end of it. Often the concept of the ‘ideal me’ is based on other people, others we perceive as “perfect” or what society frames as aspirational. Take a look at yourself – you’re blooming brilliant already, right? You don’t need an overhaul, just a tweak here and there perhaps. So pick resolutions that are small improvements to your life that make you feel good about yourself.

Embrace failure and try again

So, you think you’ve failed? You didn’t end up swimming every day like you said you would. Maybe you had a cheeky glass of wine or nibble of chocolate when you intended to avoid it all month. When we think we’ve failed we often feel dejected and simply give up. But if we don’t fail in life, we never learn, grow and evolve. Albert Einstein once said, “Failure is success in progress”. So embrace failure and don’t let it mean the end of your journey. Use it as a reset, a chance to look at how you failed and the reasons why. Learning from experience can help you pick-up and try again (and again and again, if need be).

Think small and specific

Your resolutions can be big and bold, possibly even ‘reach for the sky’-type dreams, but if they’re too large or too vague we’re less likely to achieve them. Break down big goals into smaller, more achievable goals. That way you’ll have lots of little wins to achieve on a regular basis, giving you motivation each time. Vague resolutions are hard to transfer to your everyday life in practical terms. Make them specific with clear, practical steps to keep you going.

Visualise the future you

Visualisation is a great technique for helping us achieve our goals. Boxer Muhammad Ali once said, “If my mind can conceive it and my heart can believe it – then I can achieve it.” A study, published in Neuropsychologia, found that imagining moving certain parts of your body almost trains the muscles as much as the actual movement. The mind is a powerful tool! Spend time visualising yourself achieving your resolution, either picturing it in your mind, writing it down, or by creating a picture collage. Pay attention to everything in this future moment – how you’re feeling, what you’re wearing, where you are, who you’re with, what you’re doing. By visualising you and your life in the near future – six months from now, a year from now – on a regular, even daily, basis, you could find yourself there with ease.

Go easy on yourself

Finally, changing habits and working hard to improve yourself can be tough sometimes, so go easy on yourself. Going hand-in-hand with learning to embrace failure, is the idea of not taking it all too seriously and beating yourself up about missing targets or goals. You’ve already made the first step by recognising that you need to change something, so well done and keep going. You got this!
