Celebrating big boobs: Why we love the fuller-cup

Apparently, our boobs are getting bigger.

In the UK, the average bra size is a 36D – this is up from a 34B, the average only a couple of years ago. Recent figures suggest that more than half (57%) of women in the UK are a D cup or larger.

It seems we are a nation of fuller-cups but there’s no official explanation as for this – the scientific community cites theories from nutrition to pollution as causing this ballooning of boobs. What we do know is that the fashion for boob size is always in flux.

The rise, fall and rise again of big boobs.

Breasts, specifically their size, have gone in and out of fashion over the decades. The flapper look of the 1920s had women binding their boobs flat to be fashionable; then larger breasts returned with the hourglass figure of the post-war, New Look era; they then shrank (again) when the stick-thin silhouette of Twiggy became the look du jour in the 1960s….and so it goes.

Now here we are in a more ‘body positive’ era, with bigger boobs not something to hide, squash or feel embarrassed about. Shopping choices are also improved with many high street retailers (and Royce of course) stocking larger-cup bras – in the 1950s, bras were mainly limited to B – D cups, and even a decade or so ago you would rarely find an F or G cup on the high-street, let alone a K or L!

Bigger bust advice

With advances in bra design – from innovative fabrics to clever engineering – fuller-cup women have never had better access to beautifully-fitted bras that give the best support for their figures.

Big-busted women share their advice:

Becky Swallow – 36JJ

Photographer and equestrian Becky Swallow rocked a fuller-cup in our advertising campaign back in 2021. As a 36JJ she knows the importance of finding a great fitting bra – getting the band size correct was the best advice she’s received.

“Bigger boobs mean more weight, so you want the majority of the support to be around the band rather than through the shoulders,” she says. “Finding the right bra can seem really daunting but get fitted by a trained professional, it can make all the difference.”

Becky is honest: “Big boobs are a pain in the back, literally and metaphorically.” However, she’s blessed with something an A cup could never give you, adding, “I like that it’s warm in the underboob area so if I have cold arms at night, I can snuggle them under my boobs for an instant hot water bottle!”

Nicole Moses – 38H

Nicole Moses, founder of A Body Confident You, shares her inspirational life as a mother, wellness coach and digital creator on her Instagram feed. Proud of her 38H bust, Nicole agrees that fuller-cup women need to prioritise the fit.

“I’ve had a bigger bust from a very young age so have always had to ensure that I wore the right fitting bras. Your body changes often – especially due to hormones, weight loss and gain, during and after pregnancy – so it’s important to know your size,” she says.

As for loving big boobs, everyone has their personal reasons…

“I’ve learnt to love having a bigger bust – it gives my clothing a nice shape, especially when wearing the right fit,” adds Nicole. But most importantly, “currently, my bust is loved by my baby as she enjoys her mama’s milk.”

Bra fitting advice.

What we don’t know about fitting bras, isn’t worth knowing! We always recommend you visit a professional fitter (see our stockist list to find one in your area) but if that’s not possible, there are some simple rules for measuring yourself and testing the fit of any bra at home.

So grab a tape measure, face a mirror and follow our ultimate DIY fitting guide.
