Why we should all love our boobs

Why we all should love our boobs

With all the talk of love this month, we wanted to explore a relationship that’s close to our hearts – quite literally! These significant others are with you for most of your life, but do you give them the appreciation they deserve? Quite frankly, do you love your boobs?

To anyone who read that and responded with a confident, “YES” – good for you! Sadly, not everyone feels the same. In fact, a recent study of over 18,000 women across 40 countries by Anglia Ruskin University found that seven in 10 are unhappy with their breasts. What’s more, women in the UK are among the most self-conscious about their breasts in the whole world.

Of the UK women surveyed, almost half (48%) wanted bigger breasts while under one quarter (23%) would prefer them to be smaller. Why are most of us not in the ‘Goldilocks zone’ where our breasts are not too big, not too small, but just right? Is it that many of us view our breasts through society’s lens?

Although half the world’s population have breasts, the patriarchy dominates. Our boobs are sexualised (with boob size linked to attractiveness), and sometimes shamed. These attitudes are explored a new Channel 4 documentary ‘Boobs: The story of breasts’, where filmmaker Elizabeth Sankey talks to women about what they really feel about their breasts. In the programme we meet a female plastic surgeon who explains how the ideal boob aesthetic is formed by the (heterosexual) male gaze, and that having seen in excess of 25,000 pairs, she’s seen hardly any “perfect” breasts in her career. The film also covers breastfeeding in public, losing your breasts to cancer, and how men’s nipples aren’t sexualised when women’s are – it’s definitely worth a watch on catch-up (available on 4OD now).

At Royce Lingerie, it’s no surprise that we think boobs are pretty wonderful. There are plenty of reasons why you should think your boobs are wonderful too.

They look great

Big or small, when you dress for your shape, you look great. When you look great, you ooze confidence. Low or high necklines, cleavage or no cleavage, we all instinctively know how to dress our bodies depending on our mood and occasion. And everything will look better when you ensure you’re wearing a bra in your perfect size – make sure you’re wearing the right size via our ultimate fit guide.

They feed humans

We’re all heard the horror stories of women breastfeeding in public, only to be shamed into hiding away in a restaurant loo or covering their body in a gigantic shawl. Babies need feeding – would you want to eat your lunch in the loo? Giving nourishment to our little ones via our actual bodies is one of the best things about boobs. Royce have been making nursing bras for as long as we’ve been around – browse our maternity range for beautiful bras that make breastfeeding simple and easy.

They represent where we are in life

From developing breasts in adolescence, through pregnancy boobs, nursing, menopause and beyond, our boobs live as many lives as we do. Whether big, small, saggy, pert, wrinkly…we love them because they illustrate the road we’re travelling. Some of us may lose or have lost our breasts to cancer. Can you love boobs that are no longer there? We think, absolutely! Newly reconstructed boobs or even the absence of boobs tells a story – one of survival. If you’re on that journey and are looking for comfortable bras after breast surgery or reconstruction, browse our post-surgery range.

Fearne winners

Earlier this month we offered five lucky Instagram followers the chance to win a beautiful new Fearne bra – the latest wirefree design by Royce that’s a super comfortable everyday bra for larger breasts. Our winners sent in their answers to the question: ‘What do you love about your bigger boobs?’ Here are our five favourites. Well done, ladies! A new Fearne bra is winging its way to you with love from Royce.
